Culture can have a significant impact on a person’s health; influencing a patient’s perception of health, illness and death. Beliefs about causes of disease, how illness is experienced, and treatment preferences can be influenced by culture as well. With communities and neighborhoods becoming more diverse than ever, hospitals and healthcare systems are focusing on providing care that addresses the diversity of their patient populations.
This course aims to strengthen frontline healthcare worker’s cultural knowledge and understanding, while exploring their own bias and discovering ways to improve the overall healthcare experience for all patient populations.
It is imperative that healthcare workers take culture into consideration when working with their patients, otherwise patients will distrust and disengage from the healthcare system. This course will discuss cultural competency, awareness, and sensitivity within healthcare settings. Challenges patients may encounter in relation to cultural, physical and linguistic differences are reviewed. Participants will practice asking appropriate questions that can facilitate effective management of patients’ care and address culture-related needs. Ways to provide competent cross-cultural care are also examined, to build trust with patients and improve patient engagement.
